Our President's Volunteering Experience At Plant Chicago - January 30th, 2025

In the three months, I spent more than 30 hours volunteering at Plant Chicago, a small but impactful non-profit organization located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. Plant Chicago is dedicated to cultivating local circular economies, a model that reimagines waste as a resource by repurposing materials from one process to serve as inputs for another. This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also fosters sustainability, equity, and economic opportunity for local residents.

During my time at Plant Chicago, I was immersed in a variety of roles across their organization, allowing me to contribute to the organization’s mission in meaningful ways.

One of my favorite tasks was tending to the chickens, which involved feeding them and ensuring their coop was clean and comfortable. It was a hands-on experience that connected me to the source of our food and highlighted the importance of sustainable farming practices. I also had the chance to plant and care for various plants, both in the outdoor spaces and within the aquaponics system. This involved weeding, watering, and learning about the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants in aquaponics—a fascinating example of circular economy principles in action.

In addition to my work on the farm, I helped organize items for the non-profit, ensuring that resources were efficiently managed and readily available for community programs. I also assisted with setting up the farmers market, an event that brings fresh, locally grown produce to the community while fostering connections between residents and local growers.

What struck me most about my experience at Plant Chicago was the organization’s commitment to community engagement and education. Through their outreach efforts, they are not only promoting sustainable practices but also empowering residents to take an active role in shaping their local economy. It was inspiring to see how small, localized actions can have a ripple effect, creating a more equitable and sustainable future for all.

Volunteering at Plant Chicago was more than just a chance to give back—it was an opportunity to learn, grow, and be part of a movement that is redefining how we think about waste, resources, and community. If you’re passionate about sustainability, local economies, or simply want to make a difference, I highly recommend getting involved with Plant Chicago.
